THE GEORGIA GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION OFFICE – INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Georgia’s Geospatial Information Office (GIO) is looking for an undergraduate or graduate level intern to help grown the Office. The position is available immediately and may be extended through the 2018-2019 academic year. The intern will be assigned to the Geospatial Information Officer and will be housed in the Department of Community Affairs building, in Executive Park at Druid Hills and I-85, within the State Planning, Mapping & Research team. The intern will be exposed to all these groups on a daily basis.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The tasks of the internship will focus on administrative functions in support of the State Geospatial Information Officer. The intern will be exposed to programs such as:

  • Building statewide Programs (e.g. State-wide Imagery, LiDAR, Addressing, etc) in support of every level of government, from cities and counties, to regional, State and federal agencies
  • Building and Facilitating various GIS-related Communities of Practice, including GIS technical teams and governance
  • Website and social media management, including content development and design
  • Marketing, Outreach and Education – promoting this new office throughout the State
  • Administrative functions of a State Office (administrative assistance to the Geospatial Information Officer, planning constituent meetings, preparing reports, etc.)
  • Grant, contract, and technical writing
  • Creating State guidance and best practices for every level of government
  • Development of supporting applications (e.g. StoryMaps and prototyping GIS applications for various State agencies)

CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES: The GIO’s work centers on establishing and creating sustainability for this new Office within the State. Much of the work involves local and State government and regional commission interaction, public policy, program administration, and some GIS/application building. The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding of programmatic administrative and policy concepts, some functional GIS skills such as the ability to make StoryMaps in ArcGIS Online, and, most importantly, a strong interest in the governmental processes and programs that establish the facilitation of a statewide geospatial community. As such, the following skills are preferred:

  • Comprehensive understanding of Microsoft’s suite of office software
  • Understanding of Esri software (ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, creation of StoryMaps, etc.)
  • Research and Technical writing
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to interact with internal and external partners
  • Strong organization skills, experience as an administrative assistant will be helpful
  • Impeccable attention to detail, thoroughness and time management skills; and,
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time

LOGISTICS: The intern will work 15-30 hours per week (flexible based upon class schedule and candidate’s desire) at a rate of $10-13 per hour (dependent upon educational level and previous experience). An interview will be required for consideration. A valid driver’s license and personal transportation is required.
